How to select a health plan?
Selecting a health insurance plan that is right for you and your family is a big decision. That is why we have made it easy to help you compare plans by focusing on three essential areas:
Plan options under the Affordable Care Act
Cost of each plan
Network of doctors and hospitals
With these guidelines, you can select a health insurance plan that fits your needs.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA)
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plans are organized into four categories: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The plans differ only in how you and your insurance provider share the overall cost.
Bronze Plan - Lowest premium. Highest deductible.
Silver Plan - Average premium. Lower deductible than Bronze plan.
Gold Plan - High premium and low deductible. Most of your healthcare cost is covered.
Platinum - Highest premium with the lowest deductible. This plan is best if you have routine medical care.
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
PPO networks offer reduced costs if you use network health care providers.
Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO)
An EPO typically offers a local network of doctors and hospitals to choose from. If you receive care outside of the network, it will not be covered, except in the event of an emergency.
Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
An HMO limits coverage to health providers who are under contract with the HMO company. Most HMOs require you to select a primary care provider to be your primary point of contact for your medical care, including receiving a referral if you need to see a specialist.
